NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times • Buzzfeed • Kirkus Reviews • Publishers Weekly • Chicago Public Library “Redefines friendship as something that must be protected, sacrificed for, and tended to with wisdom, patience, and love.” —Ocean Vuong, New York Times bestselling author of On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous A poignant coming-of-age novel about two best friends whose friendship is tested when they get the opportunity to leave their impoverished small town for an elite prep school. For fans of Looking for Alaska. Life in a small Appalachian town is not easy. Cash lost his mother to an opioid addiction and his Papaw is dying slowly from emphysema. Dodging drug dealers and watching out for his best friend, Delaney, is second nature. He’s been spending his summer mowing lawns while she works at Dairy Queen. But when Delaney manages to secure both of them full rides to an elite prep school in Connecticut, Cash will have to grapple with his need to protect and love Delaney, and his love for the grandparents who saved him and the town he has to leave behind. Jeff Zentner’s new novel is a beautiful examination of grief, found family, and young love. Join us for YA Book Club!

Shrek the Musical at TCT
“Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek…”And so begins the journey of an unlikely hero who just wants to be left alone in his swamp. Instead, Shrek finds himself swept into a life-changing quest alongside a fast-talking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Add a short-tempered villain, a cookie with an attitude, and a whole crowd of fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got a big, joyful mess that only a true hero can untangle. With music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, Shrek The Musical is packed with humor, heart, and show-stopping songs. Beneath the laughs and spectacle, it’s a story about friendship, self-acceptance, and discovering that sometimes the real magic is being exactly who you are. Perfect for families, date nights, and anyone who believes fairy tales can be funny, fierce, and full of heart. Come join the adventure — layers and all — on TCT’s Mainstage. https://topekacivictheatre.com/shows/shrek/ https://www.facebook.com/events/1940514907350097/?event_time_id=1940514934016761

Topeka Jazz Workshop: Music for a Sunday Afternoon
Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library · Midtown
Listen to the sounds of modern jazz from Topeka’s 18-piece big band The Topeka Jazz Workshop. The band is a collection of musicians from NE Kansas dedicated to performing & promoting jazz music. The Topeka Jazz Workshop has been a prime factor in keeping jazz alive and well in Topeka and Northeast Kansas for five decades. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear the local take on America’s original art form. Founded in 1960, the Topeka Jazz Workshop Band is the oldest continuous community-based big band in the United States! In addition to performing live big band jazz, the TJWB operates the Topeka Youth Jazz Program, which provides jazz education and performance opportunities for middle and high school students in NE Kansas. Over the years, hundreds of talented young musicians have received scholarships to jazz camps all over the county thanks to the TJWB and the financial backing of Topeka Jazz Workshop, Inc. Recently the Topeka Jazz Workshop Band had the honor to play with current jazz stars like Byron Stripling, Mike Metheny, Bill Watrous and Wayne Hawkins. From its inception TJWB consisted of local musicians who often held other full time jobs but came together for the love of jazz. The legacy continues under the direction of Cale Paquette (band director at Seaman High School) and Bob Ball (retired).

Class Cost Walk-ins: $15 Punch cards are available: 10 classes at $10 each MEET OUR NEW TEACHER!! My name is Katie. You can often find me sharing space in NOTO at Iron Warriors Gym—when people aren’t sparring, they’re rolling out their mats and practicing yoga with me. After teaching secondary school for many years, I decided to change things up in the spring of 2025. Yoga quickly became my new path. After completing my 200-hour yoga teacher training, I launched my brand, Kalalapa Yoga. It has been a wild ride so far—opening new doors, meeting incredible people, and sharing the joy of yoga with my community. I’m excited to collaborate with Dirty Girl Adventures by offering a weekly yoga class that will be a little different from the classes I teach at Iron Warriors Gym. Join me on your mat each Wednesday at 5:45 PM as we blend Hatha and Yin yoga into a calming, restorative practice. Some sessions will even take place outdoors, weather permitting, offering another beautiful way to ground ourselves and step away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Each class will close with guided meditation, leaving you relaxed, refreshed, and reconnected. I’m really looking forward to meeting new friends and building community through movement and mindfulness. https://www.facebook.com/events/3617862971725054/?event_time_id=3618455231665828
