KANSAS BALLET VISITING ARTIST PROGRAM
Each summer Kansas Ballet’s Visiting Artist program brings master dancers to the studio for a three week summer intensive study. Students at Kansas Ballet Academy train for several hours a day, five days a week to prepare for this event while receiving specialized workshops and coaching sessions with visiting artists. This year, guest artists include Nicole Graniero and Oscar Sanchez of Washington Ballet and Liang Fu and Elysa Hotchkiss of Kansas City Ballet. This amazing educational opportunity is made possible in part by the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission, support from the National Endowment for the Arts and our local Summer Celebration partners: Ramada Topeka Downtown, Capitol Federal Foundation and TPAC.
As part of the summer camp programming at Boys & Girls Clubs, over 100 campers will be introduced to the Wizard of Oz ballet and guests of Kansas Ballet.
Act I includes excerpts from Don Quixote (Graniero and Sanchez), a contemporary Pas de Deux (Hotchkiss and Fu), as well as over 80 Academy students demonstrating a range of genres. The Showcase features choreography by Kansas Ballet faculty: Jeff Potter (Modern), Amy Reazin (Pilates), Chelsea Campbell (Jazz), Russian Character Dance (Alexander Smirnov), and Classical Repertory (Stephanie
Act II features Academy dancers in the beloved childhood classic, The Wizard of Oz. This original ballet, choreographed by Kansas Ballet Artistic Directors Stephanie Heston and Alexander Smirnov, made its
debut in 2014 and has delighted families at multiple venues across Northeast Kansas, including the Columbian Theater in Wamego. This charming one-act ballet re-imagines everyone’s favorite tale of Dorothy Gale’s trip to Oz.
