National Poetry Month, a celebration which occurs each April, was introduced 23 years ago by the Academy of American Poets as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry. T.S. Eliot wrote, in his modern reverdie, The Waste Land, “April is the cruelest month,” I get it. I agree, yes, “breeding/Lilacs out of the dead land” sounds depressing, but we’ve come so far! April has become National Poetry Month and we breed poets like sunflowers out of the heartland. I believe it is time to celebrate these poets and their poems. Kansas is chock-full of poets.
