Before Hamilton reinvented musical theatre, its creator Lin-Manuel Miranda wowed Broadway with In the Heights. The four-time TONY winning musical shows life in New York’s Washington Heights, a tight-knit Dominican-American community. You’ll be guided through the lives of three generations who must choose between tradition and their future.
AN AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Music and Lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Book by Quiara Alegria Hudes.
IN THE HEIGHTS tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind. IN THE HEIGHTS is the winner of the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations.
Presented through special arrangement with R&H Theatricals. www.rnh.com

Washburn University Theatre Department’s Spring musical CURTAINS!
Curtains is a musical mystery comedy with a book by Rupert Holmes, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and music by John Kander, with additional lyrics by Kander and Holmes.
Based on the original book and concept of the same name by Peter Stone, the musical is a send-up of backstage murder mystery plots, set in 1959 Boston, Massachusetts and follows the fallout when Jessica Cranshaw, the supremely untalented star of Robbin’ Hood of the Old West is murdered during her opening night curtain call. It is up to Lt. Frank Cioffi, a police detective who moonlights as a musical theater fan to save the show, solve the case, and maybe even find love before the show reopens, without getting killed himself. Cioffi also dreams of being in musical theater.

WIFI is dedicated to promoting and celebrating film production, stories from the Midwest, and education at Washburn University, in the Topeka community, and in the state of Kansas. Its leadership holds to the mission statement of Washburn University and sees WIFI as an organization that will allow the department to foster and engage in relationships that will enhance students’ lives and help them in their development as productive and responsible citizens.
At the core of WIFI’s inception is the belief that cinema is one of the most democratic arts with its ability to reach large audiences on an accessible and inclusive level.
Each year, the WIFI Film Festival adopts a theme that it promotes through its work in the community and on kcampus. This year, the festival has adopted Washburn University’s spring 2019 theme: Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Action. The featured film at the 2019 WIFI Film Festival, by Allan Holzman, will express these ideas as it looks into DACA and immigration in the United States.
We hold the guiding principle that students at Washburn, Topeka community members, and Kansans should have a place to showcase and promote their work and come together to celebrate stories from the Midwest in film and artistic expression. We believe there are unique stories that can only be found in the Midwest, and particularly in Kansas. We support filmmakers in producing and creating stories from the Midwest that need to have a voice in our world and we advance the impact of those stories.

Hosted by Hot in Topeka Burlesque, this show is the second annual fundraiser for the historic Jayhawk Theatre in downtown Topeka.
Originally opened in 1926, the Jayhawk Theatre is a historic and architectural marvel of early vaudeville theatres and jazz-era movie palaces. The goal is not only to restore this treasure to its former grandeur because of its historical significance, but also to breathe new life and purpose into the Jayhawk by renovating it into a state-of-the-art live entertainment venue and film house. As has been true in a number of other American cities, the Jayhawk will play a significant role in the continued revitalization of Topeka’s downtown. We’re convinced that the support exists to transform the Jayhawk into a vibrant entertainment venue contributing to economic development and quality of life. It will take imagination and dedication, but it can be done. The time is now. The wait is over. #SaveTheJayhawk
Burlesque legend Gypsy Rose Lee got her start while appearing in a vaudeville act at this very theatre, paving the way for performers of today!
Join us for an evening of the very best burlesque and variety entertainment. All proceeds will go towards the Jayhawk Theatre.
This event is for folks age 21 and up – drinks will be provided by Celtic Fox.

THE SLACKERS (NYC)
The Slackers are self styled masters of Reggae, Ska and Rock’n’Roll from New York City.
The Slackers began in 1991 in NYC. After years of local gigs and rehearsing in a dingy basement in Manhattan’s lower east side, the band released its debut album, Better Late Than Never, in 1996. The band’s success resulted in the release of a second album, Red Light, on the Epitaph label in 1997. Since then the Slackers have released 11 more studio albums (The Question, Wasted Days, Slackers & Friends, Close My Eyes, Slackers in Dub, Peculiar, Boss Harmony Sessions, Self Medication, Lost and Found, The Great Rocksteady Swindle, and The Slackers [self-titled, 2016] ) 3 live albums (Live at Ernestos, Upsettin Ernestos, Slack in Japan), several EPs (International War Crimminal, My Bed is a Boat), and numerous singles and compilation tracks.
Since 1997 the Slackers have played over 100 shows every year in a total of 46 american states, 7 Canadian provinces, 22 European countries, 5 Latin American countries, and 2 Asian countries.
The band’s musical style is distinct from their contempories; a mix of early Jamaican music with classic 50’s and 60s American styles. There are influences from 50s and 60s Rock’n’Roll, Rythmn and Blues, Jazz and Latin music. Singer Vic Ruggiero has coined the term ‘Jamaican Rock’nRoll.’ to describe it. He says, “The band might play a classic Jamaican style but the vocals are distinctly American east coast, revealing the obvious connection of Jamaican music to the Doo-Wop of Harlem and the Bronx.”
THE ROUGHER ALL-STARS (KCMO)
The Rougher All Stars formed in late 2013 in the Midwest’s cultural Paris, Kansas City, best known for its distinctive contribution to jazz (and reggae) in the form of swing.
All of the members of the Rougher All Stars are seasoned professionals who have toured nationally, and internationally, with alumni from The Blue Riddim Band,RC-Dub, and early Jamaican reggae group The Fabulous Falcons, among others. The members have been preferred for back up bands for other international stars, appeared on internationally recognized recordings as studio musicians, and are often in high demand for their musicianship, attention to authenticity and integrity to music they are performing. With many members writing and arranging original pieces that still nod back to old familiar standards of their genre, this 9 piece band knows how to bring the good vibes from any style they are performing.
This authenticity and attention to detail comes from the members’ love and knowledge of the roots of their craft in blues, and more specifically, jazz and Caribbean styles. With members having this kind of passion for continuing the tradition of living knowledge of music and passing it down to further generations, they strive to keep the chain unbroken and moving forward for future musicians.
With the October 2013 joint release of “Enter The Riddim” with the legendary Blue Riddim Band (Rougher Records label mates), the group fully came together in their debut and launched into view.
2014 saw the band performing in festivals and events as well as more intimate and exclusive settings like the infamous Friars Club of New York city.
The start of 2018 has the band in studio working on recording their first full length album for Rougher Records (as yet untitled), and will include more original songs with fresh sounds with respect to their influences from early Kansas City and Kingston.
The Rougher All Stars are keen to show themselves as not just musicians, but as entertainers. Bringing classics and original modern tunes to their audience with class and style unseen in many years.
