Artists from all over the country will be descending on Washburn University’s campus for the 20th annual Mountain-Plains Art Fair, and you’re invited to join them!

The  art fair is a juried fine arts event with more than 90 artists displaying paintings, drawings, prints, photography, jewelry and work in fiber, glass, wood, bronze, steel, ceramics and textiles.  The fair will also feature hands-on projects for children, musical entertainment  and a food and beverage court.

The Mountain-Plains Art Fair is an annual fundraising event of the Mulvane Art Museum and is organized by the Friends of the Mulvane Art Museum, Inc. “The art fair is our largest fundraiser, with the proceeds supporting our education program, including our Outreach Program,” says Cindi Morrison, director of the Mulvane Art Museum. “Outreach is offered free of charge annually to over 4,000 children at 60 locations for Art Beginning in Childhood, 12 locations for Art in School, and 26 locations for Art After School. The proceeds also support the ArtLab, to which admission is always free and available to everyone.”

Laurie Niehaus is a boardmember of the Friends of the Mulvane Art Museum, and chair of the Art Fair Committee. “I hope everyone will come out to enjoy the beautiful artwork, fantastic entertainment, great food and the wonderful Kansas weather,” she says. “Many volunteers have put in many hours to make this an unforgettable event for Topekans and our visitors from other communities. A big thank you goes to all the volunteers and our sponsors.”

Niehaus recognizes the longevity of the event is due to the fair-goers. “They make all the hard work enjoyable and worthwhile. It’s exciting to be involved with the 20th celebration of the art fair.”

The live entertainment schedule includes Pastense, playing bluegrass music from 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, and 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Ashley Davis Band, peforming celtic music from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, and Bridges, rounding up both days with folk music from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.

All that art shopping is bound to make you hungry and thirsty. seveneightfive is happy to learn that wine and beer will be available for sale during the event, and concessionaires such as Crazy 8, Windwalkers, Sonshine & Co. and Chartwells will be on site, serving up tasty eats.

A family-friendly event, the kids will have fun decorating and wearing their own Cup Cake Hat, painting on the mural wall, and receiving a temporary tattoo.
