Topeka is hosting two rocking music events at two Topeka venues, so no matter what your musical inclinations may be, you’re likely to find it this weekend.
The Topeka Music Scene Band Battle, Part 1, kicks it off Saturday, June 5, at 1 p.m, at Hot Pockets in Oakland. When Les Roediger, event organizer and one of the scene’s biggest advocates, is asked why he’s holding it at such an obscure venue, he replies, “We are hosting this event to introduce some bands and music fans to a venue that they probably haven’t been to before and vice-versa, give the whole scene a little kickstart, so to speak.”
Being billed as a “battle of the bands,” 18 groups from the Midwest will compete for $500 cash, with finalists given a chance to battle it out in Part 2, for 6 hours of studio time at Topeka’s Rundown Studios. Come out to Hot Pockets 1909 NE Seward Ave and vote for your favorite band. This is a two day event and tickets are $5 for one day and $10 for both.
What began as a protest against the Phelps family has become one of the summer’s most anticipated local music events. In its fourth year, Lessman Farm is once again the location of the Truckhenge Music Festival. It is host to a variety of music genres that span alternative to classic rock and everything in between, with an emphasis on the “in between.” 12 bands will be performing on two stages late into the night, so come prepared to camp and hang out with all your friends. Admission is $10. The address for this event is 4124 NE Brier Road. Gates open Saturday, June 5 at 5 p.m. with the music starting at 7.
So, get out this weekend and show your support for our regional music scene. Whether you like rock, blues, punk, funk, jazz or anything in between, I’m sure you’re going to find it this weekend.
