It’s high time for a different sound in Topeka. That’s the idea behind the new underground dance music night, “Resistance,” set to kick off Thursday, July 22 at the Boobie Trap. Local DJ’s, Hip-hop and electronic artists will be converging at the Trap Thursday nights, along with an audience base that isn’t used to this kind of treatment. Well, in Topeka, at least.
Organizer Josh Luttrell started the dance night with fellow DJ’s and band mates from electronic group the God Project, Jeremy Gaston and Ray Brice.
“Topeka doesn’t have a dance night. There are a lot of people who go to Lawrence and Kansas City for the indie and underground music, and the neon dance parties,” said Luttrell. “It’s a chance to go hang out with like-minded individuals who share somewhat different tastes in music than the norm, rather than feed lots of money into the jukebox to hear good music all night.”
The music will range from live sets from Topeka and area artists to the whole gamut of “future and retro music,” including industrial, house, disco, hip-hop, goth, punk, alternative, indie, 80’s, 90’s and “anything else that’s great dance music.”
“This is not the top 40 stuff that you’ll hear everywhere else in town,” said Luttrell.
It’s an all-ages event, with drinks available for the 21+ crowd. The organizers believe that there aren’t many options for kids around Topeka to experience a music scene.
“It will be a different place where a younger crowd can go find some entertainment and listen to some new music,” said Luttrell, a Topeka native who felt a lack of options when he was growing up.
The opening night will feature local artist Anthemous with live hip-hop and DJ sets. The live element will be available often, but not always. It depends on community interest and the availability of artists. One thing is for certain, though. “Resistance” night at the Trap will be anything but average. Like the name implies, said Luttrell, “It’s about fighting against the idea of Topekans sitting around and doing nothing. There’s definitely symbolism there.”

The event begins at 9 p.m. Free to ladies, $1 cover before 10 p.m., $3 after. All-ages event.

We also encourage those interested to help make it their night. We’re all down for a community event, with a variety of participants. Bring what you can to the scene and you’ll take from what you want.
